Kahane: 'Ship Them Out' Jdl Leader Pledges To Expel All Arabs From Israel

Posted: January 16, 1986

Rabbi Meir Kahane, the Brooklyn born ultra-nationalist member of the Israeli parliament, the Knesset, last night said "there is a contradiction between Western democracy and Zionism" and warned that if Israel is to survive as a Jewish state, all Arabs must be expelled from the country.

Kahane, who is condemned by most mainstream Jewish organizations in both the United States and Israel, said that if his Kach Party comes to power, ''Arabs who are not ready(to leave), I promise you, I'll ship them out on trucks."

Kahane delivered a lecture before about 200 people during a program at 7347 Bustleton Ave., sponsored by the militant Jewish Defense League.

For more than two hours, Kahane, who was stripped of his United States citizenship last October by the State Department because he holds political office in Israel, warned of the dangers of increased marriage by American Jews to non-Jews and the growing Arab population in Israel. Ore than 700,000 Arabs live in Israel, making up about 18 percent of the country's population.

"We are losing our country" because the Arab birthrate in Israel is higher than the Jewish birthrate, Kahane said.

Barry E. Ungar, president of the Jewish Community Relations Council, criticized Kahane yesterday for spreading "racism, demagoguery and hate- mongering." Ungar said Kahane "perverts Jewish religious and ethical values and violates the very essence of the democratic nature of the state of Israel."
