Matz Picks Up His 3d Title At Valley Forge

Posted: May 05, 1986

Michael Matz of Collegeville reined Chef cleanly over a twisting jump-off course of nine fences in 43.355 seconds to win the $30,000 Valley Forge Military Academy Grand Prix equestrian competition yesterday.

The horse, owned by former 76ers owner F. Eugene Dixon, earned an $8,000 first prize. The championship was Matz's third in the event. He also won in 1978 and 1981 on Jet Run.

It took 2 hours, 20 minutes for the field of 46 horses to complete the first round over 17 jumps, and only 10 negotiated the course without fault to make it to the jump-off.

In the jump-off, only two horses other than Chef sped faultlessly over the course - Abdullah, ridden by Olympian Conrad Homfeld, finished second in 45.659 seconds, and V.I.P., ridden by Steve Stephens, was third in 48.688 seconds.

McLain, with Olympian Leslie Burr Lenehan in the saddle, had the fastest time - 41.771 seconds - but knocked down two rails for eight faults and wound up in seventh place.
