Bicyclist Found Beaten In Woods

A bicyclist on his way from Vermont to Florida was found beaten in a clump of woods off Rodmor Road, near Township Line in Haverford Township after he called for help for more than seven hours Sunday, township police reported.

Kevin Grover, 32, of Londonderry, Vt., was found by police about 8 a.m. He was wrapped in his sleeping bag, had blood on his face and his eyes were swollen shut.

Haverford Police Sgt. Charles Brooks said Monday that Grover told officers he had been beaten by two unidentified men around 1 a.m. Sunday and lay calling for help until morning.

Grover was taken to Haverford Community Hospital where he was listed in stable condition yesterday. Police said he was being treated for a deep cut over his right eye, a fractured skull, a fracture below his left eye and a shoulder injury.

Grover told police he had met two men and had drunk some beer with them in the woods near where he was found.

"Two guys did me in," Brooks quoted Grover as saying. Police said they were unable to fully interview Grover because of his injuries.

Brooks said robbery was not believed to be a motive because Grover's bicycle and his possessions were not taken.

Grover was found after a resident called police. The resident said people often sat in the woods drinking and screaming, so she at first did not think the screams for help were real, Brooks said. She called police after the cries continued.

Brooks said that another resident, who had been walking his dog in the area, later told police he saw Grover that morning but did not call police

because he thought Grover was a vagrant.
