"I worked on my game early this week," said Sauers, whose best finish this year was a fourth-place showing in the Byron Nelson Classic.
"Come Wednesday afternoon, things were getting better, and by Thursday everything was in place. I hit every shot today the way I wanted to. The crowd was yelling when I made my putts, and that got my adrenalin going."
Sauers completed a bogey-free round with birdies on three of the final four holes. He sank a putt of 15 feet on No. 17 and a 12-footer on No. 18.
Peete carded seven birdies and a bogey on this way to a 6-under 65.
George Archer, the winner of the tournament in 1984, put himself into contention with a 66 for a 209 total, tying him with 1980 winner Wayne Levi.
