W. Phila. Man Sentenced For Raping Woman In Cab

Posted: February 18, 1987

A 24-year-old West Philadelphia man who borrowed a Yellow Cab from a relative on Dec. 21, 1985, and then posed as a cab driver to pick up a 29- year-old woman in Center City, yesterday admitted that he raped and robbed her.

After pleading guilty to rape, robbery and a weapons offense, Richard McDonald of Chestnut Street near 62nd was sentenced to eight to 20 years in prison.

Assistant District Attorney Amanda Kauffman said the woman got into the cab at Broad and Pine streets, and asked to be driven to her North Philadelphia home.

McDonald pulled the cab over at 10th and Mount Vernon streets, got into the rear seat and placed a knife to the woman's throat, said Kauffman. After raping her, McDonald took the woman's handbag and drove off.

A short time later, police spotted McDonald driving the cab near 12th and Spruce streets. Inside the cab, police recovered items that belonged to the woman.

McDonald, who wept as Kauffman read the facts to Common Pleas Judge Francis A. Biunno, agreed to plead guilty in exchange for the DA recommending the sentence.

At the time of the rape, McDonald was on parole for robbery, according to Kauffman.

Common Pleas Judge Lynne M. Abraham yesterday sentenced Kevin Cofer, 20, of Master Street near 54th, to a four to 15 years in prison, plus 10 years' probation, for the robbery of a West Philadelphia grocer on Nov. 17, 1984.

Assistant District Attorney Richard Sax said Cofer was one of three men who took part in robbing Choong Kim, 43, in his store on Media Street near 53rd. They got $200.

Sax said Cofer was the only person arrested for the crime. He said nine months previously, Cofer was placed on probation for another holdup.
