La Salle lost its hopes for qualifying for the Catholic League North Division playoffs yesterday when it lost a hard-fought, 61-58, decision to host Bishop Kenrick.

The two teams played evenly throughout the game. The Explorers outscored the Knights by 13 points in the second quarter, and the Knights came back to outscore La Salle in the third quarter.

The loss dropped La Salle's league record to 8-8 and its overall record to 12-13. Kenrick improved its league record to 10-6.

With 2 seconds left, La Salle had a chance to tie the game, but Kevin Iaquinto (19 points), who had already hit two 3-point goals in the final minute, missed on a third 3-point try from 25 feet.

Malcolm Macklin led the Explorers with 20 points and 11 rebounds, scoring frequently on strong inside moves to the basket. The Explorers outrebounded the Knights, but they turned the ball over more times. The Explorers also failed to stop Kenrick's fastbreak game, except in the second quarter.

Ed Hull and Justin Dougherty led Kenrick with 14 points apiece.
