Man Questioned In Burglaries Of Area Churches

Posted: March 20, 1987

A Philadelphia man has implicated himself in the burglaries of 20 Catholic churches and rectories in Pennsylvania and three neighboring states, detectives said yesterday.

They also said that they were investigating him in connection with many more burglaries of religious buildings. In all, detectives said, the man implicated himself in "several hundred" burglaries in the last three years in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware and New York.

The man, Mark Haller, 34, of the 400 block of West York Street in the city's West Kensington section, was arrested about 5:45 p.m. Wednesday as he was getting out of a 1985 Nissan in the 2000 block of North Orianna Street. Detectives said the Nissan was stolen March 12 from the rectory at the St. Laurence Catholic Church in Upper Darby.

Haller was charged with receiving stolen property and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, and also with the Feb. 5 burglary of St. Henry's Catholic Church in the 4300 block of Reese Street.

Subsequently, detectives said, a computer check determined that Haller was a fugitive from New Brunswick, N.J., where police have charged him with the burglary of a church in 1982.

Detectives said Haller took items that could be readily converted into cash.

Haller was being held in the Philadelphia Detention Center after failing to post $150,000 bail.
