Bobby Clarke Scores Again

Posted: April 12, 1987

Several years ago an American couple vacationing in Canada by car stopped at a small motel in a remote area of Ontario. A friendly innkeeper greeted them and asked where they were from. Upon being told Philadelphia, he beamed and said: "You must be very proud of Bobby Clarke."

Philadelphia is indeed very proud of Bobby Clarke, and that incident dramatizes the esteem in which he is held not only in Canada, where ice hockey is the national pastime, but wherever the game is played. His election to the Hockey Hall of Fame last week is an honor thoroughly deserved by one of the National Hockey League's all-time greats.

Now general manager of the Flyers, Mr. Clarke played 15 seasons with the team, captained it to Stanley Cup championships in 1974 and 1975 and is its all-time leading scorer. But statistics can't begin to capture the spirit of this dedicated player and leader who tenaciously refused to surrender to the effects of diabetes and has been an inspiration to teammates, fans and all who thrill to the performance of an athlete who demands the best of himself and brings out the best in others.

On and off the ice, Bobby Clarke has the qualities that epitomize the Hall of Fame.
