Wip Radio Up For Sale

Posted: June 29, 1987

Although the official word came Friday, employees at WIP (610/AM) were told Thursday afternoon that the radio station was on the block.

Owned by the Metropolitan Broadcasting Corp., which purchased it from Metromedia earlier this year, WIP is being sold along with another Metropolitan property: WASH-FM in Washington, D.C.

"A great deal of interest has been expressed in these two stations in recent months," said Carl C. Brazell Jr., Metropolitan's president. "We feel this is the optimum time to sell them and expect them to go at a premium price. Their sale will strengthen our cash position and provide financial fexibility," he said.

Metropolitan also owns WMMR (93.3/FM) and six other radio stations across the U.S. The corporation was formed in 1986 by an investor group led by former members of Metromedia Radio management and Morgan Stanley, the investment bankers.

FUN WITH RALPH

The Great One, Jackie Gleason, has gone on to that great beer hall in the sky, where he's probably rubbing elbows with other late members of the Royal Order of the Raccoon.

His image, however, is still kicking up dust here on earth via reruns of ''The Honeymooners." In his honor, Channel 57 has scheduled a ''Honeymooners" marathon from 8 to 11 p.m. on Sunday. In addition, "The Honeymooners" will run twice a night - at their normal 11 p.m. slot and also at 7:30 p.m. (preempting "The Odd Couple") - next Monday through Friday.

CHANGING CHANNELS

CBS has announced that "Houston Knights" will return to the air Tuesdays at 9 p.m. beginning July 28. In addition, the station is moving its Tuesday night movies to Thursdays, starting this week with "All The Right Moves."
