City Workers Get Pay Increase

Posted: July 26, 1987

After working for six months without a contract, about 60 unionized employees of Burlington City were granted a 5 percent across-the-board salary increase Tuesday night.

Nonunion employees also received raises under the 1987 salary ordinance approved by the City Council.

"We are satisfied with this pay raise," said John Lazzarotti, president of Local 1044 of the Communications Workers of America, which represents about half of Burlington City's 125 municipal employees. "However, much too much time has been taken to get this ordinance passed."

The union has a two-year contract that includes a 6 percent raise for 1988, but the council will have to pass another salary ordinance next year.

Under the new contract, this year among union members, a mechanic will earn $22,880; a clerk/typist, $17,550, and a clerk/stenographer, $19,396.

Among nonunion employees, under step 1 in the 1987 ordinance, the city clerk will make $34,920 and the director of welfare, $23,517.
