Drexel Beats Lafayette For Title

Barb Yost clinched the win with a free throw with 10 seconds to play and Gina Miniscalco scored her 1,000th point as Drexel (19-9) captured its first East Coast Conference championship with a 56-54 win over Lafayette yesterday at Rider.

Lafayette (20-10), which failed to score in the game's first seven minutes,

drew within a point when it scored with 22 seconds to play. But Yost drew a foul on the Dragons' ensuing possession and made one of two free throws. She finished with nine points and was named the tourney's most valuable player.

Penn State 82, Rutgers 69 - Freshman Tanya Garner's 22 points led host Penn State to an upset over No. 7 Rutgers in an Atlantic 10 game.

Suzie McConnell added 13 points and 11 assists for Penn State (18-11, 11-7). Sue Wicks had 26 points and 14 rebounds for Rutgers (23-4, 17-1), which had won 15 straight.

Gannon 69, Philadelphia Textile 53 - Avis Carter and Kim Butera scored 12 points each as Gannon (26-3) beat Textile (21-8) in the championship game of the Mid-East Conference playoffs at Queens College.

South Alabama 100, Cheyney 55 - Ella Williams' 25 points paced visiting South Alabama (18-7) over Cheyney (10-16) in a nonleague game.

Holy Family 70, Allentown 63 - Debbie Schopfer posted 33 points and 20 rebounds as Holy Family won the NAIA District 19 tournament. The Lady Tigers (33-1) will go to North Carolina to play the District 26 champ, No. 1-rated Wingate (N.C.) College, on Wednesday night.

Ohio Northern 73, Trenton State 58 - Char Smith scored 20 points to lead Ohio Northern (23-3) over Trenton State (22-6) in the NCAA Divison III South Atlantic Regional championship game in Union, N.J.
