Untimely Weather For Easter

Posted: April 01, 1988

What's up Sunday?

A basketful, that's what.

First up, of course, is Easter, a day when people get decked out in their finest threads, bonnets and bootees. A day for parades, promenades and pageants. It's also a day when people flock to church services in higher numbers than usual.

This year, they will be doing all of that in an atmosphere of gloom. Accu- Weather said that, after a cloudy day tomorrow possibly with rain, Easter Sunday will be cloudy with even more rain. The highs will be in the 60s.

Now . . .

If you want to get to church on time, better set your clock ahead one hour before hitting the sack tomorrow night, or early Easter morning.

Betcha forgot that daylight-saving time begins at 2 a.m. Sunday. Thought so. Well, it does. No April foolin'.

For the second straight year, DST - as decreed by Congress in 1986 - starts the first Sunday in April, instead of the last.

Daylight-saving time is actually a misnomer. It saves neither daylight nor time. It simply shifts an hour of light from morning to evening by delaying both sunrise and sunset.

On the lighter side, it's sorta like stealing from Robin Hood to pay Little John, or something.

Also up Sunday is the 22-cent stamp. It goes up three cents to two bits.

The increase is expected to help the Postal Service out of its financial hole, which in fiscal 1987 was $223 million deep.

Nobody likes rate hikes. But whaddya gonna do? If you can't lick 'em, join 'em.
