Park Commission Names New Executive Director

Posted: September 15, 1988

Veteran city park system employee William E. Mifflin yesterday was named executive director of the Fairmount Park Commission, succeeding Alexander L. Hoskins, who takes over today as streets commissioner.

Mifflin, 41, joined the park system staff in 1968 and has held various administrative and supervisory positions, including chief park horticulturalist and acting assistant director.

He left the park system June 1 to become a deputy to Recreation Commissioner Delores Williams-Andy.

"We are extremely pleased that we have such an experienced and capable person as Bill available to us to step right in and take over the duties of director of the park," said park commission President F. Eugene Dixon. "We are also grateful to Recreation Commissioner Andy for making it possible for Bill to return to the park on short notice to assume the duties of park director."

Williams-Andy is on the 16-member Fairmount Park Commission, which appointed Mifflin to the top administrative post during a meeting yesterday afternoon. Park information officer Dick Nicolai said Mifflin's appointment was by unanimous vote.

Mifflin will assume his new duties immediately, Nicolai said. The executive director's post pays $70,000 a year, Nicolai said.

Mifflin, a Philadelphia native, is a graduate of the city's Walter Biddle Saul High School of Agriculture and of Temple University, where he earned a master's degree in recreation administration. He lives in the Andorra section of the city with his wife, Sally, and two children.
