Schoenhut Claims A Club Title Once Again

Posted: October 12, 1988

Bob Schoenhut doesn't own Willow Brook Country Club in Moorestown; he just tends bar in the restaurant upstairs at the clubhouse.

Then again, maybe he does own Willow Brook - the fairways and the greens, that is.

On the first Monday in October, Schoenhut, a Hainesport resident, won the club championship with a 6 and 5 victory over Curt Schuler, regaining the title that Mickey O'Hara of Delran stole away with last year.

It was only a matter of time until Schoenhut won it back. Beginning in the early '70s, he has won the club championship . . . "Well," he said, "I kind of lost track."

Let the record show Schoenhut won it an even dozen times. Pro Bill Karr checked.

Working an occasional night shift in his nearly 20 years at the course has given Schoenhut time to hone his game. He usually shoots around par and plays to a 2 or 3 handicap, he said.

Bob Thornton of Mount Holly, undaunted by the creek that cuts across the fairway on No. 3 at Springfield Golf Center, put together 6-iron and 5-iron shots to eagle the par 4, 335-yard hole. His playing partner was John Sargent. Thornton plays the course several times a week.

Rich Blash and Maryann Hajduk took the Dorothy Porter mixed couples tournament at Riverton Country Club Oct. 2. Second were Fred and Jane Devece and three teams tied for third - Bart and Pat Milano, Warren and Toss Lamon, and Bud and Ginny Felton.

Tom Elder regained the club championship at Little Mill Country Club with a 6-over par score in the 27-hole medal play shootout of the four finalists at the Evesham course on Oct. 2. He won the title two years ago but couldn't defend last year because of an illness. Chad Upjohn shot a medal 93 the same day to win the club's junior title.
