The sordid story of Kendall Lee Hatfield begins long before the tragic encounter with Setzer.
It begins with his father, who has gone through jobs, residences and wives almost as quickly as he has gone through bottles of whiskey, according to family members. And with his mother, who as a teenager was raped by an uncle and gave birth to a retarded girl.
A generation before that there was a grandfather, Everett "Cap" Hatfield, who borrowed his nickname from one of the most violent men of the Hatfield- and-McCoy feud. And two generations before that, there was a marriage in which Cap's grandfather, Wallace Hatfield, married a cousin, a 7-foot-tall woman named Melvina "Big Grandma" Hatfield.
Lawyers and psychologists are trying to make sense of this bizarre family history and how it has affected Kendall Lee Hatfield.
Hatfield, law authorities say, went on a crime spree over 11 separate days between July 4 and Oct. 10, bringing terror and mystery to Philadelphia and its suburbs in a baffling series of psychosexual acts.
In addition to the murder charge, Hatfield - who had no criminal record before his October arrest - faces 17 burglary charges. In nine of those cases, Hatfield is also charged with sexual assault of women. His alleged victims ranged in age from early 20s to late 60s.
In seven of the cases, police reports say, Hatfield masturbated after breaking in. One woman has testified that Hatfield forced her to masturbate. In eight of the cases, police reports say that Hatfield laid out women's underwear around the house, often arraying the underwear on beds.
