Pioneers Get Revenge On Cougars

With two straight losses behind them and with the District 1 Class AAAA playoffs looming, Conestoga's Pioneers needed to put a good game together. And that's just what they did Friday night.

Conestoga got 27 points from senior guard Chris Perillo and knocked off visiting Springfield (Delco), 69-62. The Pioneers are 12-5 in the league (14-9 overall) going into tonight's regular-season finale at Haverford High. The district playoffs open Friday.

"It sure was a big win," said Conestoga coach Pete Fredrickson. "It was especially big after losing to Strath Haven and Ridley back-to-back. There was a revenge factor too, since Springfield had beaten us last year at the end of the season to tie us for first place. This year, it was for second place. So it still meant something."

The Cougars (11-6, 13-10) trailed Conestoga, 30-24, at halftime but got back in the game with a 21-16 advantage in the third quarter. But Conestoga played a strong fourth quarter, outscoring Springfield, 23-17, to ease to the victory.

Fredrickson was also pleased with Perillo's defensive effort against Springfield.

"He did an outstanding job," Fredrickson added. "We asked him to do a lot. The key to beating Springfield is stopping George Pendergrass and Greg Jefferson. And one of the ways to do that is to put heat on the point guard so those two don't get the ball as easy. I thought Chris did a great job there."

Springfield was paced by Pendergrass with 20 points. Matt Lenhard and Brian Hollis added 10 points each to the Conestoga effort.
