Arizona All Alone At The Top

Arizona was a unanimous choice as the nation's No. 1 college basketball team in the United Press International poll released yesterday and a near- unanimous choice in the Associated Press rankings.

The Wildcats (24-3) collected all 41 first-place votes from the UPI board of coaches and 61 of 66 from the AP's panel of sportswriters and broadcasters.

La Salle nearly broke into the polls for the first time this season. The Explorers finished 21st in the AP voting. They also received votes from the UPI board, but totals are not included in that poll.

The top 10 teams in each poll were the same, but their order was slightly different.

Oklahoma (26-4) and Georgetown (23-4) were second and third in both ratings. The remainder of the UPI top 10, in order, was Syracuse, Illinois, Indiana, Duke, North Carolina, Michigan and Missouri.

The Nos. 4 through 10 teams in the AP poll were Illinois, Syracuse, Indiana, Duke, Michigan, North Carolina and Missouri.

Arizona is the third team this season to hold the No. 1 spot for two consecutive weeks. Duke was the preseason No. 1 team and held the position for the first nine polls of the regular season. Oklahoma, second this week with four first-place votes and 1,236 points, held the No. 1 spot for the two weeks before Arizona started its modest streak.
