Russell P. Heuer Jr., Engineer And Executive

Russell P. Heuer Jr., 54, a retired engineer and investment company executive long active in alumni and youth programs, died suddenly Tuesday at the Warwick Hotel in Center City. He lived in Haverford.

Born in Bryn Mawr, he was the son of Russell P. Heuer Sr., a distinguished professor of engineering at the University of Pennsylvania, and he followed his father into science.

Mr. Heuer was a 1951 graduate of the Haverford School. He earned his bachelor's and master's degrees in chemical engineering at Penn and did graduate work at the university's Wharton School.

He worked as an engineer at the General Refractories Co. in Philadelphia

from 1958 to 1960, then was appointed by Penn as its assistant dean of undergraduate studies. In 1967, Mr. Heuer joined Cooke & Bieler Inc., a Philadelphia investment firm, as a portfolio manager. In 1970, he was named president of the Essex Research Corp., a Wilmington investment holding company, a position he held until his retirement a year ago.

Mr. Heuer was vice president and secretary of Educational Advisory Service International Inc., a Philadelphia-based college placement and career counseling firm, and a trustee of St. Johnsbury Academy, in Burlington, Vt.

Mr. Heuer was long active in alumni and fraternal affairs at Penn. He served as alumni president in 1955, and at various times was president of the International Alumni Council, vice president of the Graduate Varsity Club and secretary of the Engineering Alumni Society.

He was a leader in the university's giving program and traveled around the country to help motivate the university's volunteer fund-raisers. At the time of his death, he was treasurer of the General Alumni Society. In 1977 he was awarded the Alumni Award of Merit, the society's highest honor.

He was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon national fraternity and served as an adviser to the fraternity's chapters at Penn and Drexel University. He was fraternity regional president from 1960 to 1964 and national president in 1975. In 1981, the fraternity awarded him its highest honor, the Citation for Distinguished Service. He was also a member of Sigma Tau and Alpha Chi Sigma.

Mr. Heuer was a member of the Youth Work Committee and Foundation of the Union League, which annually presents citizenship awards to more than 250 boys throughout the Philadelphia area, and was secretary of the foundation's scholarship fund.

He was active in the Philadelphia Police Athletic League, the Boy Scouts of America and the Pop Warner Little Scholars Inc., of which he was a trustee and recipient of its 1983 Super Sport Award.

In addition to the Union League, Mr. Heuer was a member of the Philadelphia Country Club, the Rittenhouse Club, the Fourth Street Club, the Bay Head Yacht Club in New Jersey and the Lago Mar Club in Florida.

He is survived by his sister, Charlotte DeSerio, and his stepmother, Rubye Heuer.

A memorial service will be held April 25 at 4 p.m. at St. Mary's Episcopal Church on the University of Pennsylvania campus.
