Council Member To Study Sidewalks

Aldan Borough Councilman Joseph A. McCollian Jr. is going to be watching his step this week.

McCollian will be inspecting the borough's sidewalks to ensure that residents are maintaining their properties.

The inspection, which is done annually by the chairman of the highway and sewer committee and the code inspection officer, includes checking for broken sidewalks that are deemed potential hazards to pedestrians.

"The people that want to take care of their property usually maintain it without prompting," McCollian said at a council meeting Wednesday night. ''It's the other guys we're after."

Residents with broken sidewalks and deteriorating curbs will be notified and be given 60 days to repair them, McCollian said.

Violators who do not repair the damage within that time will be given citations and $5 penalties for each day afterward that the damage remains.

At the Wednesday meeting, the council also reported that preliminary work was done April 1 to install a new scoreboard at Carr Memorial Field.

About 10 people volunteered their time and donated equipment to tear down the old scoreboard and excavate ground for the new one.

A conduit was installed from the backstop to the scoreboard stand, and ground was torn up along center field, where the electric scoreboard will be installed. All the material and equipment was donated, McCollian said.

The scoreboard was purchased as part of a joint venture involving the borough's recreation board, the Aldan Boys' Club and the Aldan Girls' Club, each donating $1,000.

The work is expected to be completed by April 21, McCollian said.
