The West Chester East soccer team will warm up for the fall season in the Independence Soccer Cup at the German-Hungarian Soccer Club in Oakland, Bucks County, where four of the region's top high school teams will clash Friday and Saturday.

Leading the way for the Vikings will be All-America forward Steve Gillmor, who helped his team post a 13-4 record in the Ches-Mont League last season. East will be pitted with Philadelphia Catholic League power Archbishop Ryan, William Tennent High School of Warminster, Bucks County, and Wilson of Westlawn, a suburb of Reading.

"I think this tournament is great because it showcases some of the best teams in the area," said Richard Groff, president of the Eastern Pennsylvania Youth Soccer Association, one of the sponsors of the event. "It's a great way to kick off the regular season."

The Cup action begins at 6 p.m. Friday when East takes on Tennent. Ryan, ranked fourth in the country last year by USA Today, will face Wilson in the second game.

The first-round losers will face off in the consolation game at 6 p.m. Saturday with the championship game following.
