Chandler Road Relocation Eyed

Traffic again was a major topic of concern at the Pennsbury Township Board of Supervisors meeting.

The board Monday discussed relocating Chandler Road so traffic would be rerouted to enter U.S. Route 1 at a safer intersection.

Chandler Road connects Route 1 with Pennsbury Way West. The proposal would close the Chandler Road-Route 1 intersection, and Chandler Road would be relocated to meet Pennsbury Way West at a point closer to Route 1. Traffic could then cross Route 1 at Pennsbury Way West, where there is a traffic light.

The board is considering the plan because the intersection of Chandler Road and Route 1 presents dangers for northbound traffic crossing Route 1 from Chandler Road.

Resident Bayard Taylor protested the plan at the meeting, saying the relocated Chandler Road would run next to his home. The board agreed to look into alternatives before making a final decision.

The board approved a request from Shirley Hughes, vice president of the Four Seasons Garden Club, to hold the club's monthly meeting at the township building.

The club is involved in various community activities, said Hughes, including making holiday flower arrangements for the Pocopson Home and holding annual Christmas workshops.

"One of the reasons we wanted to move into this building was to encourage community involvment of this type," said Supervisor Robert Mantell.

The board supported amended plans presented by Brandywine Valley Engineers Inc., developers of Chadds Ford West, a commercial business complex at the corner of Route 1 and Ponds Edge Drive.

The change incorporates additional parking space, the elimination of three

carriage houses on the property, dividing one building into two and adding to a building.

Mantell said the plans must go through the township Planning Commission before the board can give final approval.
