Temple Varsity Eight Wins 10th Straight City Title

Temple's varsity eight outraced Drexel and Villanova yesterday on the Schuylkill to win the Bergen Cup for the city college rowing championship for the 10th straight year.

Overcoming Drexel's early advantage, Temple advanced its beat from 36 strokes per minute to 42 on the homestretch and sprinted past the finish markers three lengths in front of Drexel. Temple covered the 2,000-meter course on flat water against a head wind in 6 minutes, 12.59 seconds. Drexel was clocked in 6:24.4, and Villanova was third by three-quarters of a length, in 6:29.3.

The Temple shell was manned by Steve Nowmos (bow), Paul Murray, Jeff Cowley, Chris Hoey, Jedd Dietrich, Mike Alton, Tim Stinson, Ken Piree (stroke) and Mike Moore (coxswain).

Drexel won the women's varsity eight championship by 1 1/2 lengths over Temple in 7:18.3. Temple was timed in 7:24.2, and St. Joseph's finished in 7:47.5. Coach Ed McKenna's Drexel crew comprised Jodi Miller (bow), Marta Mulyk, Karen Majeski, Debbie Yeomans, Jenny Walto, Christine Wanner, Suzy Bloom, Megan Schmiedicke (stroke) and Marie Beresford (coxswain).
