Ayrault Guides Reading

READING, Pa. — Bob Ayrault pitched six innings of shutout ball to lead the Reading Phillies to a 4-1 victory over the Canton-Akron Indians and a split of their Eastern League doubleheader yesterday.

In the first game, Greg Roscoe allowed six hits over seven innings as Canton-Akron whipped Reading, 8-3.

The Indians won the first by scoring a pair of runs in each of the first, second, fifth and seventh innings. Former major-leaguer Ed Hearn went 3 for 4, including a two-run homer in the seventh. Andy Ashby (2-1) was the losing pitcher.

In the second game, Jeff Grotewold hit a solo homer for the Phillies in the fourth. He also had an RBI ground out in the first.

Reading shortstop Kim Batiste had five hits in six at-bats in the doubleheader.

SCRANTON 5, SYRACUSE 1

MOOSIC, Pa. - Keith Miller homered to break a 1-1 tie in the fifth inning and later started a three-run eighth as the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Red Barons posted an International League victory over the Syracuse Chiefs.

Bob Scanlan (2-5) snapped a personal five-game losing streak while teaming with Chuck McElroy and Todd Frohwirth on a seven-hitter.

Miller's solo shot down the right-field line gave the Red Barons a 2-1 lead. He singled to start the eighth, in which Ron Jones hit an RBI single and Steve Stanicek a two-run double.
