The Chimeras' Lamont Smith set a school record, winning the 400 meters easily in 48.1 seconds, and teammates Gerard Reynolds (long jump, 400 intermediate hurdles) and Gil Winters (javelin) also won state titles.
Reynolds was knocked off in the 110-meter hurdles final despite a time of 13.9. After stumbling out of the blocks, he placed second behind Elizabeth's Torin Moore, who clocked a 13.7.
But Reynolds quickly turned his disappointment into a mission. He came back to win the 400 intermediate hurdles in 53.8 and the long jump with a leap of 24 feet, 2 1/2 inches.
Reynolds and teammate Devon Patton (53.9) combined for the 1-2 spots in the intermediate hurdles, giving the Chimeras 10 points.
Winters, the Chimeras' solid field-events performer, won the javelin with a
throw of 200-3. The team of Dave Lawyer, Tyshon Williams, Smith and Patton won the 1,600-meter relay in 3:19.2.
GROUP 3. South Jersey teams outclassed the Group 3 field, taking five of the first six places.
Edgewood emerged as team champion (37 points) for the third time in school history. The Eagles were followed by Bridgeton (26), Eastern (20), Franklin Township (18), Woodrow Wilson (15) and Highland (12).
Individual champions included Edgewood's Mike Anderson in the 110 high hurdles and Chris Bolden in the shot put, Eastern's Bill Mobely in the 400 intermediate hurdles (54.1), and the Woodrow Wilson team of Darian English, Ronald Johnson, Greg Eccleston and Shane DeGannes in the 1,600 relay (3:20.5).
Edgewood's Anderson won the 110 high hurdles with a time of 13.9 to give the Eagles six points.
He also placed second in the 400 intermediate hurdles (54.8) behind Eastern's Mobley.
"This is my senior year, and this was my last chance to get it done," Anderson said. "I've been peaking the past three weeks, and I waited a long time for this."
Bolden also picked up first-place points for Edgewood when he won the shot
put with a season-best throw of 60-5 1/4. Bridgeton's Warren DeShields was third at 56-7.
GROUP 1. Haddon Heights (31 points) continued its season-long battle with Haddon Township (26 points) by topping the Hawks for the state crown. The two teams had finished 1-2 in the sectionals at Bridgeton the previous week.
The Garnets received just one first yesterday: Dino Flora won the javelin with a throw of 188-9. But Heights scored in nine of the 15 events to win the school's first title since 1975.
Other individual champions included Haddonfield's Tim Shanahan in the 3,200
meters (9:30.5) and Paulsboro's Quincy Lee in the long jump (21-9).
GROUP 2. Cinnaminson peaked at an opportune time, winning the state title with 22 points to edge Chatham (20) and Burlington City (19 1/2).
The lone individual champion for the Pirates was Steve Hughes, who cleared 14-0 in the pole vault.
Penns Grove's Robinson staged a tough battle with Hopewell Valley's Aaron Echternacht to win the shot put. Robinson tossed a group and South Jersey record distance of 63-11 1/4 on his final throw to best Echternacht (63-6 3/4) and break the South Jersey record of 61-10 1/2 set by Pitman's Harry Dilks in 1971. Dilks' record was the oldest track record in South Jersey.
Other individual champions included Kingsway's Ben Liles in the long jump (22-10 1/2) and 400 hurdles (53.9), Burlington's Mike Boone in the javelin (188-3),and the Burlington 1,600 meter relay team of Brian Bailey, Adam Gacdnec, Malik Woodard, and Boone (3:22.9).
