Daily News Drops Show On Wip

Posted: August 30, 1990

"The Daily News PM Edition" will end its three-year run on WIP radio (610-AM) with this evening's show. The show, featuring sports writers and columnists from the Daily News, was on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 6 to 8 p.m.

"We've had three years of fun doing the show," said Daily News executive sports editor Mike Rathet. "But WIP is going in a direction that makes it difficult for us to remain partners. It was particularly difficult for us to agree on a schedule that worked for both the Daily News and WIP. I thought we parted amicably. I would hope WIP feels the same way."

"We didn't end it," said WIP program director Tom Bigby. "Mike Rathet ended it. We (were going to) pre-empt a night, Wednesdays, during football season. There's a precedent set. (The show) wasn't on Thursdays last year during the football season. It was Rathet's position that if the show was chopped up, he wanted to pull his guys."

Said Rathet: "The only thing we've ever wanted is a time to start and a time to finish consistent on the three days."

The show often was pre-empted or shortened by, choose one: Flyers pregame shows, Sixers games, Big 5 games or the Joe Paterno Show.

"I absolutely liked the show," Bigby said. "It's rare that radio stations can get such knowledgeable guys. I'd still like to work something out with the (Daily News writers) on a contingency fee basis.

"We'll give (Rathet) some time to cool off. Wouldn't it be better to have two nights than none? I don't know that this is finis. It's not in my mind."
