OAKVILLE, Ont. — John Cook and Brad Faxon each fired a 7-under-par 65 yesterday to share the first-round lead at the $1 million Canadian Open.

Canadian Dave Barr is 1 stroke back at 6-under 66. Fourteen others, including two-time Canadian Open champion Curtis Strange, PGA champion Wayne Grady and Canadian Dick Zokol, were 3 shots back with 68s.

Cook, the 1983 Canadian Open winner, began by bogeying the first hole, but came back with nine birdies before finishing with a bogey.

"I've had a number of good finishes here," he said. "I like it here; you know this is a tough golf course coming in, and you know what to expect."

Faxon, who has yet to record a PGA victory, played a solid, consistent round, carding seven birdies while going without a bogey.

Defending champion Steve Jones carded a 2-under 70 while Mark Calcavecchia, who was runner-up to Jones last year and has finished second in five PGA events this season, is at 1-under 71.
