University City Shop-hopping

Sometimes Christmas shopping comes down to 60 minutes. The lunch hour. The hour between trains. The hour between day-care departure and dinner. The hour before the curtain goes up. Get it done; go have fun. This week, Neighborhood Strip Shopper does 60 minutes in University City.

Even though the 30,000 students from Drexel University and the University of Pennsylvania make up a hefty chunk of this neighborhood's population, real people live there too.

University City consists of the surrounding neighborhoods of Garden Court, Powelton Village, Walnut Hill, Cedar Park, Spruce Hill and West Powelton, says city planner Rick Redding. Within this two-square-mile area is the shop-o- phobic's salvation.

Story continues below.

In one block, between 34th and 36th streets, Walnut and Sansom streets, a frantic shopper can dart into monster chains like the Gap, Benetton, Sam Goody's and Mrs. Field's Cookies. Tear around the corner and duck up Sansom Street and you'll find more eclectic fare: an international publications store and a small gallery crammed with homey things. Take a brisk walk west to 41st and Locust streets and you'll find the Warehouse, home to a well-stocked Urban Outfitters. And that's only the tip of the iceberg . . .

If your gift-giving requires international flair, this is the place to find those hidden treasures. Porcelain necklaces from China ($18), lapis earrings

from Afghanistan ($15), Japanese tea sets ($35) and sake sets ($15-$22) are just a few of the prospective gifts here. But store buyer Miriam Ball says the non-profit shop is noted for their African masks and carvings, priced 30 percent to 40 percent less than other places. Exquisitely carved masks from the Ivory Coast ($95) and the Congo ($100) hang on the walls. If your budget won't permit extravagant spending, there are leather lipstick cases ($3.25) and brilliantly colored wool scarves from Ecuador ($10.50).
