Valley Forge To Host Antique Show

Posted: February 21, 1991

The Renninger antique and collector show, which has been held in various locations since 1975, will run tomorrow through Sunday at the Valley Forge Convention Center, with more than 200 exhibitors expected.

It will be Renninger's first show in the area.

"We have markets in Kutztown, Adamstown and in Florida. We decided to try Valley Forge because we feel the Philadelphia area could use another good antique show. Also, I think the Valley Forge area is a good center, because it is relatively close to New York and Philadelphia," said Jim Renninger, owner of the Renninger markets.

Both antiques and collectibles will be on display at the show this weekend. An antique is classified as something older than 100 years, Renninger said, and a collectible is something that is collected - but not necessarily dated.

Renninger said that, among collectibles, the folk art field is growing rapidly and will be well-displayed at the show. He said that many artists are creating specific limited-edition items. One such artist is June McKenna, who has been sculpting Santa Clauses since 1983. A 1983 McKenna Santa Claus could sell for $3,000 to $5,000, he said.

Art pottery is also becoming very popular among the collectibles, Renninger said. "One man called me to let me know that he is bringing a piece of pottery that will sell for $25,000," he said.

There will be many other antiques and collectibles ranging from baseball cards to furniture at the show - priced according to every pocketbook, Renninger said.

For serious buyers, Friday night from 6 to 9:30 p.m. is considered a preview night. The preview fee is $20. Admission is $5 on Saturday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
