ATLANTIC CITY — Tyrone Frazier, who had lost his bid for a world title in his previous fight, wanted to make a comeback last night. Unfortunately for Frazier, so did Merqui Sosa.

Sosa hit Frazier with amazing accuracy for nearly 10 rounds. At 2 minutes, 32 seconds of the 10th and final round, referee Joe Cortez stopped the fight when Frazier, appearing unresponsive, took three straight punches.

Just moments before, Cortez had given Frazier, who was bleeding profusely

from the nose and mouth, a standing eight count.

This super-middleweight fight, at Merv Griffin's Resorts Casino Hotel, was a lopsided affair.

"I did what I was supposed to do," said Sosa, who last month lost a hard- fought split decision in a middleweight bout against middleweight contender James Toney.

Sosa, from Brooklyn, N.Y., raised his record to 19-1 with his 15th knockout; Frazier, who had gone after Virgil Hill's World Boxing Association light-heavyweight title in his previous fight, is 18-3-3.

"The guy was strong, and he was very awkward," said Frazier, from Philadelphia. "He had a very good uppercut, and he wasn't winding up on his punches. He was just throwing them out there."

Most found their mark.
