Barons Come Back To Win

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Pitcher Darrel Akerfelds took a beating, but the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Red Barons rallied to defeat the Columbus Clippers, 9-8, in an International League game last night.

Julio Peguero drove in the tying run in the eighth inning with a suicide squeeze. Then he stole second, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored the winning run on a sacrifice fly by Greg Legg.

Tony Longmire had singled in one run and Gary Tremblay had doubled in two more to start the five-run eighth.

Akerfelds, recently sent down by the Phillies, started and lasted just 4 2/ 3 innings. He walked seven batters and gave up three hits and six earned runs.

Bob Ayrault, who relieved in the fifth, got the victory, and Jay Baller picked up his ninth save.

NEW BRITAIN, Conn. - Derek Livernois struck out 10 Reading Phillies in eight innings to give the New Britain Red Sox a 6-0 Eastern League victory.

Livernois, a lefthander, walked only two and improved his record to 3-0 in throwing New Britain's second consecutive shutout.

In the third inning, David Milstein broke a scoreless tie with a two-run homer off Reading starter Mike Williams. Those were all the runs New Britain would need.
