Downingtown graduates Jay Cafferky and Jake Straub, who shared soccer MVP honors in the Ches-Mont League last season after leading the Whippets to a fourth straight league championship and second place in the Class AAA state playoffs, have taken separate sports paths in college.

Cafferky, a striker who scored 19 goals last season, made the Penn State traveling team and was in St. Louis this weekend for the Met-Life Soccer Classic.

Penn State coach Barry Gorman calls Cafferky his "most heavily recruited walk-on."

Straub, a three-year starter at midfield for the Whippets, has decided to play basketball instead of soccer at the University of Scranton. He was a point guard for the Whippets' basketball team.

Two other Downingtown graduates are members of the soccer team at Drexel. Sophomore Greg Wilson is a forward, and freshman Rich Taylor is a midfielder.

Mia Vollkommer and Thaomi Nguyen, who were keys as Unionville won three straight Southern Chester County League volleyball championships and put together a 27-game league winning streak going into this season, have taken their game to a higher level.

Vollkommer is at the University of Connecticut, and Nguyen is at Bryn Mawr.

Another Unionville graduate has already put up some extremely impressive numbers for the Drexel volleyball team.

Judy Fenoglio, a 5-foot, 10-inch middle blocker, led the Dragons with 42 solo blocks last season.

Her .94 block average was enough to place her third in the East Coast Conference.

Carrie Hogg, a 1991 graduate of Octorara, is a member of the Old Dominion field hockey team. Old Dominion, in Norfolk, Va., is a defending national champion.

Lynn Weidemoyer, who earned All-Ches-Mont League honors in field hockey and lacrosse while at West Chester East, is now a junior forward on the Millersville field hockey team.
