Olympic Issues: Let Sales Begin

Posted: February 02, 1992

The 1992 U.S. Olympic commemoratives have been put on the market and can be ordered at pre-issue discount prices through Feb. 28.

A gold $5 coin, silver dollar and a clad half-dollar will be sold in 12 combinations. The coins carry a surcharge - $35 for gold, $7 for silver, $1 for the half-dollar - which goes to the U.S. Olympic Committee to support American teams and defray training costs.

The coins' designs were chosen in a competition that drew 1,107 entries. One winner, Steven M. Bieda, whose design is on the reverse of the half- dollar, is a self-taught artist and a law student at the University of Detroit.

The silver dollar carries the legend "XXV Olympiad" four times on the edge of the coin, the first edge lettering to appear on a U.S. coin in 60 years. Its design shows a baseball pitcher on the obverse and the shield topped by Olympic rings on the reverse.

The gold coin shows a sprinter in front of the American flag on the obverse and the eagle and Olympic rings on the reverse. The half-dollar depicts a female gymnast with stars and stripes in the background. The reverse shows a torch and olive branch with the motto: "Citius, Altius, Fortius" (Faster, Higher, Stronger).

Pre-issue prices for the coins are $195 for the gold proof, $28 for the silver-dollar proof and $8.50 for the half-dollar proof. The dollar and half- dollar proof set will be $35, and the three-coin proof set will be $225.

COIN SALE. An unusual gathering of love tokens will be auctioned in a pre- Valentine's Day mail bid Feb. 12 at Coin Galleries, the foreign department of Stack's in New York.

Love tokens, a 19th-century custom, are coins and medals on which initials, monograms, names and designs have been cut. They usually were made

from gold coins of $3, $5 or even $20 denominations. Since many have monograms, a prospective buyer may have to search to find appropriate initials. Information: 212-582-5955.
