What has become the Philadelphia branch of Ukraine's Donetsk Ballet - about two dozen dancers who having been living in Germantown since the summer - has found a novel way to produce one of the most lavish ballets of the Russian repertory, Don Quixote.

On Friday and Saturday, a production that uses 60 children as well as the Donetsk professionals will be performed at the Germantown Friends School.

The idea of presenting a major ballet with children in secondary roles belongs to Nancy Malmud, the director of the Wissahickon Dance Academy. "I thought it would be a good way to gather support for the company," she said of the Donetsk troupe, which is having difficulty finding an audience.

The children are from 8 to 19 years old and come from about 15 dance schools in the area, ranging from established schools like the Pennsylvania Ballet school and the Pennsylvania Academy of Ballet to the dance classes in Philadelphia's recreation programs. Malmud said that the younger children will be used as "stage decoration" but that several of the most talented older students have small solos.

Don Quixote, which revolves around a comic incident in the Cervantes novel, stars Vadim Pisarev as Basil, a barber, and Inna Dorofeyeva as the spitfire Kitri.

The Donetsk Ballet will repeat the show on April 12 at the Harrington School in Mount Laurel. Many of the children who will be at this performance study dance in New Jersey.

This weekend's performances are at Taulane Auditorium, Germantown Friends School. For information, call 215-849-7950. For information about the Mount Laurel show, call 609-235-6969.
