Rendell To Enter Hospital Swollen 'Boo-boo' On His Left Elbow

Posted: July 10, 1992

Mayor Rendell is to be hospitalized today for - well, a boo-boo on his arm.

Rendell is scheduled to spend 24 hours in Jefferson University Hospital starting around noon today to receive intravenous antibiotics for an infection that apparently grew from a small cut on his left elbow.

Rendell told reporters yesterday that he woke up Monday morning with a swelling "about the size of two golf balls" on his elbow. After visiting Jefferson's emergency room, Rendell was referred to Dr. Barbara Frieman, an orthopedist who determined the swelling was caused by an infected cut.

Rendell said that the infection had given him "flu-like symtoms" Monday and Tuesday, and that Frieman had drained fluid from his elbow several times.

Rendell said he felt fine Wednesday and yesterday, but that the swelling in his arm hadn't subsided. That's why Rendell scheduled his hospitalization for noon today.

He said he'd keep a full schedule of afternoon meetings in the hospital and would celebrate his 21st wedding anniversary there tonight. He declined to say whether he'd wear one of those dainty little hospital gowns.

Rendell promises to get out in time to see his son Jesse's baseball game tomorrow afternoon.
