GRAPES OF WRATH

* Enjoy your favorite California wines - while you can. Anti-drinking campaigns have cut into sales, and too-rapid expansion and tighter banking rules are pushing many wineries toward financial ruin. A dozen California wineries have filed for bankruptcy court protection in the last two years, and more filings are expected.

SOUL FOOD

* "You Are What You Eat," the first of five lectures on food and fitness, will be held at 6 p.m. today at the Unity Church building, 245 S. 16th St. Participating in tonight's program are Marilyn Marter, Inquirer food writer; Jack McDavid, of Jack's Firehouse, and Michael DiPalma, a naturopathic physician.

GRAINS OF INFORMATION

* The USA Rice Council is offering a free brochure, "The New Food Pyramid," that is filled with nutrition information and tips on preparing rice. Send a self-addressed, stamped business-size envelope to: USA Rice Council, Department P, Box 740121, Houston, Texas 77274.

KUGEL KONTEST

* Does your kugel take the cake? The Society Hill Playhouse is holding a kugel baking contest. The winning recipe will be served during intermissions of Beau Jest, a romantic comedy opening Sept. 23 that revolves around a Jewish family dinner. Send your recipe by Sept. 11 to Society Hill Playhouse Kugel Contest, 507 S. 8th St., Philadelphia 19147. Judging of finalists will be on Sept. 20.
