Detour Routes Advised Due To Miami I-95 Work

January 03, 1993|By Donald D. Groff, FOR THE INQUIRER

Vacationers driving on Interstate 95 through Miami are being advised to avoid it during rush hours because of construction this winter, according to the Florida Department of Transportation. A 10-mile section is being improved with new lanes, ramps and connectors, but the construction is likely to mean delays during certain periods. The speed limit has been reduced to 45 m.p.h.

from 55 m.p.h.

Traffic pattern changes related to the aftermath of Hurricane Andrew in southern Dade County also may affect visiting motorists.

Story continues below.

The transportation department recommends these alternate routes:

* The Sawgrass Expressway, which links with I-95 north of Fort Lauderdale and provides access to I-75 and to Florida's turnpike extension in western and southern Dade County.

* During off-peak hours, State Road 826, the Palmetto Expressway.

* Biscayne Boulevard/U.S. 1, which runs through Greater Miami between I-95 and the shoreline.

For construction-related information, contact the I-95 Public Information Office at 305-576-6556 or the Gold Coast Commuter Services Office; 800-234-7433 within Florida.

HOLOCAUST MUSEUM OPENING. The U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum is scheduled to open April 26 on the National Mall in Washington. The 250,000-square-foot building, designed by Pei Cobb Freed & Partners, will use artifacts, oral histories, documentary film and photographs to describe the systematic killing of six million European Jews and millions of Gypsies, Poles, homosexuals, Jehovah's Witnesses, handicapped, political and religious dissidents, Soviet POWs and others. The museum will offer many educational services and facilities. It's next to the Treasury Department at 14th Street and Independence Avenue, not far from the Washington Monument. Information: 202-822-6464.

"FAMILY ISLANDS" OUT. For years the Bahamas has been promoting its islands beyond New Providence (where Nassau is located) and Grand Bahama (home to Freeport) as the "Family Islands." No more. Tourism officials have decided to abandon that term in favor of Bahamas Out Islands. The change is aimed at promoting the islands to honeymooners and young couples - lucrative segments of the travel industry.

DUDE RANCHES. Two new publications can help anyone considering a dude ranch vacation in 1993. The Colorado Dude & Guest Ranch Association's directory of ranches is available free by calling 303-724-3653 or writing the association at Box 300, Tabernash, Colo. 80478. The directory describes 40 member properties.
