Israeli Cobra helicopters fired three rockets into the village of Arab Saleem in south Lebanon yesterday to retaliate for a Shiite Moslem guerrilla ambush that wounded at least two Israeli-backed South Lebanon Army militiamen, police and Israel's army said. The village is a traditional stronghold of the Iranian-backed Hezbollah, or Party of God, said a police spokesman. Hezbollah claimed responsibility for the attack. There were no casualties.

BOMBS DESTROY GAS TANKS
IRA bombs devastated two huge gas tanks in Warrington, a small town about 200 miles northwest of London yesterday, hours after a police officer was shot and wounded in a confrontation with three men with Irish accents.
The Irish Republican Army said in a statement last night that two of its ''active service units" carried out the "coordinated bombing blitz." British Gas said about 100 people were evacuated from homes near the gas tanks. No one was reported hurt. Amateur video pictures showed a fireball rising 100 feet or more from a ruptured tank.
