The 97th annual inter-club team series of the Women's Golf Association of Philadelphia - fielding 1,008 players on 144 teams in 24 divisions - witnessed an upset right off the bat yesterday with the defeat of Merion, defender of the Philadelphia Cup championship.
Merion, victorious in all five rounds last year, went down by 4-3 to Philadelphia Country Club on the Gladwyne course.
In the other two contests of this premier division, Huntingdon Valley repulsed Wilmington Country Club, 4-3, and Riverton defeated Waynesborough, 4-3.
