Not The Bulletin Expected

When we first saw the urgent "PM-TV-CBS-CHUNG" on the Associated Press wire, we thought, Oh, my God. She's announcing her pregnancy. She got the network to release the news for her.

Clearly, Connie Chung has had an urgent attitude toward having a baby for years. She and Maury Povich have done shows on it, and detailed the anguish of fertility testing for anyone who had the misfortune to tune in. Why, this month in Good Housekeeping magazine, she confides that she's still trying - at almost 47. Hope does spring eternal.

But, no. She's taking up with that gently spacy Texas anchorman, Dan Rather, and the duo, as of June 1, will co-anchor the "CBS Evening News." The network's news president, Eric Ober, said the network was "redefining the role of the anchor."

Rather said: "I'm looking for a way to do it better and this is what that's about. This is not your father's 'CBS Evening News.' We want to do it better and I want to have fun doing it."

Then, sounding strangely like Marlo Thomas, he added, "This lets me be free to be me."

The duo kissed and hugged before speaking to reporters, but they did not address whether the stylish Chung will have to wear a sweater vest.
