Marvelous Move

For an inspiring example of the power of the pen, look no farther than a recent edition of The New England Journal of Medicine and the correspondence initiated by one Sammy Blum, age 7, of Houston.

Young Blum wrote to express outrage that five of 100 people depicted on the Marvel Masterpieces cards he and his friends had collected were smoking. ''Some of them were villains and some were heros (sic)," he wrote. "Why do they make cards for kids that show people smoking?"

Good question. In reply, Terry Stewart of the Marvel Entertainment Group took pains to emphasize that "no Marvel trading card was ever intended to suggest approbation of smoking" and said the company would "omit smoking materials from all future Marvel trading cards."

Now if they'd only stop making heros (sic) of people named Blaze . . .
