New Restaurateur In Camden Is Shot

The owner of a Camden Chinese restaurant who started the business last month was shot in the head while apparently trying to prevent a holdup there late Thursday.

Yang Jia Chan, 46, of Camden, was in critical condition yesterday at Cooper Hospital-University Medical Center, police said. Chan and an employee were in the Happy Dragon Chinese Food Restaurant, at 72 S. 28th St., at 11:55 p.m. Thursday when a man tried to kick down the rear door in a robbery attempt, police said.

The employee told police that Chan had gone to get a pot of boiling oil or water to deter the robber. When he returned to the door, the gunman forced the door open and fired one shot. The bullet struck Chan in the forehead. The gunman fled on foot.
