Sellout Crowd You'll Need A Scorecard Phillies' Spring-training Roster Includes Oldies And Not-so-goodies

Posted: February 16, 1995

CLEARWATER, Fla. — The Phillies handed out copies of their official 1995 spring-training

roster yesterday and it didn't take long to figure out that this is not business as usual.

For one thing, there were 92 players listed. That's about twice as many as usually show up at the Carpenter Complex this time of year.

For another thing, in the space reserved for the previous season's stats, fully 28 of those expected to be on hand had a cryptic notation following their names: Did Not Play. The Phillies will not identify the 33 players signed as potential replacements - Phillers? - but, ahem, that line could be considered a clue.

There are several players who are pushing 40, which former Phillies reliever Kent Tekulve always insisted was exercise enough. The most ancient of the golden oldies is infielder Todd Cruz, who was born less than two months after Phillies pitching coach Johnny Podres was named Most Valuable Player of the 1955 World Series for his role in bringing the Brooklyn Dodgers their first world championship.

There are some blasts from the past: Marty Bystrom, Jeff Stone, Ken Oberkfell.

There are a total of 15 innings of 1994 major league innings pitched. They all belong to lefthander Blaise Ilsley, who allowed 25 hits in those innings while racking up a 7.80 earned run average for the Cubs.

There are 209 big league at-bats from last year. They all belong to Kim Batiste, who batted .234 and was banished to the Triple A roster as a result.

There is Norm Charlton, who missed all last season recovering from elbow surgery and signed a minor-league contract as a result. It would not be shocking if he didn't attend as a gesture of solidarity for the Major League Players Association.

There are two players (lefthanders Mike Linskey and Chris Shanahan) assigned Lenny Dykstra's No. 4. There are three players (righthander Carlton Loewer, third baseman Scott Rolen and outfielder Jeremy Kendall) who will be wearing Darren Daulton's No. 10.

There is Greg Legg, who had signed on to become a coach at Class A Clearwater after a dozen years of bouncing around the Phillies' minor-league system.

There is not veteran outfielder Curt Ford. Supposedly, the Phillies were outbid for him.

The 47 pitchers and seven catchers are scheduled for physicals and their first official workout tomorrow. The remaining 38 infielders and outfielders are set for next Wednesday.

Interestingly, the daily workouts will be officially run by Don Blasingame, field coordinator for the Phillies' minor-league system. Manager Jim Fregosi and his coaching staff will do little more than observe from a distance.

In addition to the Phillers, the rosters of Triple A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, Double A Reading and Clearwater have been invited. That includes some recent high draft choices including Loewer, Rolen, righthander Wayne Gomes, outfielder Chad McConnell and first baseman Jason Moler.

There are also whole bunches of guys who played with no particular distinction in the lower reaches of the Phillies' farm system last year.

Looking for ways to recoup some of the money they've lost in the strike, the Phillies might want to consider selling programs for the workouts. Can't tell the players without a scorecard, indeed.
