Penn Wood Grad Leads Harvard Glee Club

Posted: March 16, 1995

When Scott Kerr first heard the Harvard Glee Club, in opening ceremonies his freshman year, he was so impressed he joined the club right away.

Now the Penn Wood High School graduate is president of the club and is preparing to bring his fellow singers to the First Presbyterian Church of Lansdowne for a one-show engagement on March 31.

"It's probably the best men's choral group in the country," Kerr, 20, said recently.

Now in its 137th year, the glee club is the oldest men's chorus in the country. Its long tradition at Harvard includes collaborations with the Boston Symphony, record productions and numerous European tours. The group was once conducted by alumnus Leonard Bernstein at the Vatican.

Directed by Jameson Marvin, the club comprises 48 male voices. Its repertoire includes the music of the Renaissance, folk songs, classical selections, light jazz and Harvard football songs.

"It's good music that people enjoy," Kerr said, adding that some of the program includes audience participation.

Many of the young men in the glee club are not music majors, Kerr said. ''There's a broad range of students from across the university."

Kerr, an education major, was a member of the Penn Wood band and choir, which helped him develop his musical skills, he said. He also sang in the Philadelphia Boys Choir for several years. "That's where I got my (voice) training," he said.

He graduated from Penn Wood in 1992.

In its Lansdowne concert, the glee club will perform works by Thomas Tallis, Franz Liszt, Randall Thompson, Nicolas Gombert and Robert Shaw, as well as a medley of football songs and the Harvard alma mater.
