Canton-akron Edges Reading Phillies, 1-0

READING — Pat Bryant collected three hits and scored the only run and Pep Harris and two relievers combined on a five-hitter as the Canton-Akron Indians beat the Reading Phillies, 1-0, in the Eastern League last night.

The Phillies suffered their third straight loss and their fifth in six games and remained half a game behind Trenton in the EL South.

Bryant doubled with two outs in the seventh and scored on Damian Jackson's single.

Harris won for the first time as a starter, going the first six innings. He allowed four hits, struck out four and walked one.

Dan Graves worked the final two innings for his eighth save.

Matt Beech took the loss, going 8 1/3 innings and allowing eight hits and one run. He struck out five and did not walk a batter.

MOOSIC, Pa. - Mike Lieberthal's first-inning homer sparked Ryan Karp's sixth victory as the Red Barons dumped the visiting Red Sox.

Wes Chamberlain hit his 12th home run for the Red Sox.

TRENTON - The Thunder wasted a chance to gain ground on Reading in the Eastern League's torrid Southern Division race, losing to Northern Division leader Portland.

WILMINGTON 4, KINSTON 1

WILMINGTON - The Blue Rocks won for the sixth time in seven games.
