Sources: Watters Upset With Gruden

Two Eagles players and two other club sources confirmed last night that running back Ricky Watters expressed "angry words" at Jon Gruden, the team's offensive coordinator, immediately following the Birds' 20-9 victory over the Rams.

One club source who saw the brief incident said that Gruden approached Watters's locker while congratulating players on the victory, when Watters ''turned away and told Jon to basically get lost." The alleged words took place before the locker room was opened to the media.

One Eagle contacted at home last night did not wish to discuss the matter, saying only, "Watters made a big mistake with an assistant coach."

Watters had just 13 carries, for 38 yards, in the game. He also had two receptions for another 17.

The Eagle player confirmed that Watters swore at Gruden. Asked if he knew the reason, the player said, "I'm sure he wanted the ball more. That's him."

The other Eagle said Watters "blew his stack" and clearly was not happy with his role in the victory. KYW (Channel 3) also reported last night that Watters was unhappy with a special package of plays included in the game plan for running back Charlie Garner. Neither Eagle had knowledge of such information.

Gruden could not be reached for comment last night.
