Tired Lemieux Helps Lift Pens

Posted: January 06, 1996

A bout of fatigue isn't keeping Mario Lemieux off the scoreboard.

Lemieux scored one goal and set up another 15 seconds later in a five-goal second period as the Pittsburgh Penguins beat visiting Detroit, 5-2, last night and ended the Red Wings' 10-game unbeaten streak.

Lemieux, who sat out last season for health reasons following five years of back problems and a bout with cancer, is awaiting the results of tests that will determine if his thyroid gland is underactive, a common condition for people who have undergone radiation treatment. Lemieux did so during his 1993 battle with Hodgkin's disease.

``I'm tired all the time,'' said Lemieux, who has 89 points, including 35 goals. He is taking medicine for the condition.

Lemieux battled fatigue in 1993-94, the season after his bout with cancer.

He is likely to sit out tonight's game at St. Louis to avoid putting undue strain on his back.

STARS: MOOG SIDELINED Dallas Stars goalie Andy Moog went on the injured reserve list and will be lost for four weeks after surgery on his right knee to repair damaged cartilage. He was hurt Wednesday night when his knee hit the goal post.
