Walter Gilinger; Was Owner Of An Auto Shop

Walter E. Gilinger, 98, of Lafayette Hill, a retired automotive shop owner and bus-service owner, died Saturday at Gwynedd Square Nursing Center in Upper Gwynedd.

Mr. Gilinger was born in Whitemarsh Township, graduated from the Barren Hill School and studied engineering at night at Drexel Institute of Technology, now Drexel University. He was a lifelong resident of Lafayette Hill.

After 55 years of operation, he retired in 1975 as owner of Gilinger's Garage in Lafayette Hill. The business is now known as P&I Automotive.

He had operated a bus service for local school districts for many years until selling the business in the mid-1960s.

Mr. Gilinger was chief of the Barren Hill Volunteer Fire Company in Lafayette Hill for 20 years and was named a life member. He also was a member of the Whitemarsh Ambulance Company and often repaired its ambulances free.

He was a 32d-degree Mason and member of Fritz Lodge 420 in Conshohocken, the Blue Lodge of the Lehigh Valley Consistory in Allentown and the LuLu Temple Shrine in Plymouth Meeting.

He was a founding member of both St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Lafayette Hill and the Whitemarsh Lions Club.

His wife of 55 years, Lillie Davenport Gilinger, died in 1985.

He is survived by a daughter, Jane Schultz, and two grandchildren.

A funeral will be held at 10 a.m. today at St. Peter's Lutheran Church. Burial will follow in Barren Hill Cemetery, Ridge Pike and Church Road, Lafayette Hill.
