Teacher's Arrest On Drug Charges Spurs Probe

School Superintendent David Hornbeck said yesterday that he would seek a ``full investigation'' into allegations that a teacher smoked crack cocaine in a classroom at Benjamin Franklin High School.

The teacher, Caleb Jackson, 41, who lives in the 2300 block of North Colorado Street in North Philadelphia, on Friday was charged with possession of narcotics.

Police said they were summoned to the school by Principal Tilghman Moore after Jackson was discovered inhaling from a pipe inside Classroom 305 Friday morning. A nonteaching assistant said Jackson had dismissed his students early and when the assistant entered the room, she smelled crack cocaine, according to Sgt. John Dougherty of the Ninth Police District.

Police said Jackson attempted to flee but was caught outside the school.

``We're looking at this situation very seriously, gathering all the facts,'' Hornbeck said. ``It's very troubling to me . . . but I don't think it's appropriate for me to say anything more at this point.''

Charles Thompson, the district's executive director of communications, said the arrest of a teacher for allegedly using drugs represents a serious breakdown of ``the special responsibility that we entrust to teachers.''

A physics teacher, Jackson has been employed by the school district for two years.
