Rapids Bring 12-0 Galaxy Back To Earth

DENVER - South African star Shaun Bartlett scored in the 56th minute yesterday to help give the Colorado Rapids a 2-1 victory over Los Angeles, the Galaxy's first loss of the Major League Soccer season.

Bartlett took a pass from Roy Wegerle, beat two defenders, and put a 12-yard shot past charging goaltender Jorge Campos. Wegerle had scored the first goal for the Rapids (6-9) in the 23d minute.

Brad Wilson scored for the Galaxy (12-1) in the 78th minute with a low kick from six yards out.

CLASH 4, MUTINY 0 SAN JOSE, Calif. - Eric Wynalda scored two goals and assisted on a third as San Jose (8-7) climbed into second place in the Western Conference, 10 points behind Los Angeles, with a victory over Tampa Bay (7-6).

METROSTARS 4, CREW 0 COLUMBUS, Ohio - Goaltender Tony Meola posted his third consecutive shutout and fourth in the last six games as New York-New Jersey defeated Columbus.

Nicola Caricola opened the scoring with a goal from 80 feet out in the 23d minute. The MetroStars (7-8) scored the rest of their goals in the game's final 14 minutes.

The best scoring chance for the Crew (5-10) came on a penalty kick in the 29th minute.

UNITED 3, REVOLUTION 1 WASHINGTON - D.C.'s Raul Diaz Arce scored into an open net with eight minutes remaining, handing New England (5-8) its fourth loss in five games.

With his ninth goal of the season, the Salvadoran broke a 1-1 tie from the 6-yard line on a pass from John Harkes. The victory kept the United (6-9) in second place in the Eastern Conference.
