King, Right Winger, Signs With Flyers

The Flyers continued to fill out their training-camp and minor-league roster yesterday, signing right winger Steven King.

King scored 40 goals for the Baltimore Bandits of the American Hockey League last season, and added two more with the NHL's Anaheim Mighty Ducks in seven games.

The 6-foot 195-pounder turned 27 on Monday. He was signed to a one-year, two-way contract, because he'll likely spend part of the season with the Philadelphia Phantoms, the Flyers' new AHL affiliate.

King will earn the standard $100,000 for playing in the AHL, but can see his paycheck increase to $300,000 if he joins the NHL roster at some point next season.

``Steven wants to prove himself and is willing to start over,'' said his agent, Mark Witkin. ``He's an honest worker, a checker, and a guy who will stand in front of the net and get some goals for you.''

King has spent portions of the last four seasons on NHL rosters, scoring 17 goals in 67 games.

``He's a veteran player who looked pretty good with Baltimore even though he was older than those players,'' Flyers general manager Bob Clarke said. ``He wants another crack at the NHL, and we're going to give it to him.''
